Established in 1815, Laphroaig has a rich history and continues to uphold traditional production methods. The distillery malts its own barley using locally sourced peat, which imparts the characteristic smoky aroma and flavor associated with Islay whiskies. The malted barley is then fermented and distilled in traditional copper pot stills, resulting in a spirit that captures the essence of Islay’s rugged coastal environment.

Having said that, Laphroaig is often perceived as quite an acquired taste amongst the faint of heart, perhaps due to its intense peaty, smoky and rich flavours. During the prohibition, an American Surgeon General was adamant that it was unfit for recreational consumption, and instead declared it to be strictly utilised for medical purposes only.

Càirdeas, pronounced [car-chuss] means “friendship” in Gaelic. These are released annually as distillery exclusives and for the Friends of Laphroaig group. Some early releases were labelled as Feis Ile exclusives and although this is no longer expressly stated, due to the time of year in which they become available, they are still considered as spiritual Feis Ile releases.

The Càirdeas for 2021 was matured in a1st fill ex-bourbon casks before transferring to 2nd fill ex-Bourbon quarter casks and finally finishing in PX casks.
