Mortlach Distillery, situated in the Speyside region of Scotland near Dufftown, has a long and storied history dating back to 1823. What sets Mortlach apart is its distinct distillation process, involving a combination of traditional techniques such as partial triple distillation and the unique “2.81 distillation.” The use of worm tub condensers further contributes to the whisky’s character, resulting in a robust and full-bodied spirit with savory, meaty notes complemented by fruity and spicy undertones. The influence of sherry casks during aging adds depth and complexity to Mortlach whiskies. While it remains a key component in premium blended Scotch whiskies, Mortlach has also gained recognition through limited official single malt releases and independent bottlings. This 25 year old was part of the new Mortlach core range in 2014. It has been matured exclusively in refill American oak casks. The smaller bottle sizes and price tags on this range drew some criticism from fans however, and the range was overhauled again after just four years. The new 2018 range was topped by a 20 year old expression instead.
