ARDBEG Alligator Committee Reserve for Discussion

ARDBEG Alligator Committee Reserve for Discussion

Located on the southern coast of Islay, an island in Scotland. Ardbeg whiskies are known for their intensely smoky and peaty character, which stems from the traditional production methods employed at the distillery. The malt used in Ardbeg’s whiskies is malted with peat, which imparts a distinctive smoky flavour during the drying process. The whiskies often feature complex layers of maritime, briny, and medicinal notes, with hints of citrus and chocolate.

Bottled ‘for discussion’ by the Ardbeg Committee, this was released in June 2011. Ardbeg Alligator takes its name from the aggressive charring of the American casks the whisky was matured in. This charring level is known as the Alligator char because the cracking of the wood under the heat looks similar to the skin of an Alligator.

Officially launched in January 2000, the Ardbeg Committee is a fan club that loosely tasked with safeguarding the distillery from a return to its darker days of the previous century. Open to anyone to register, the club has access to exclusive releases like this one, which are never available to the general public. Membership also have access to a private room at the distillery and are asked to adhere to semi-tongue in cheek set of Committee rules, one of which warns of grave consequences for those who mix their Ardbeg with anything other than water.
